Change VS Progress in Manufacturing

Often change can be difficult and more often than not, change is resisted. We as humans naturally resist change, the fear of the unknown can be gripping at times. In order to grow we have to show progress, only way to show progress is to change. Hence the saying "Growing pains" or any other Mr. Myagi/inspirational meme quote you can think of, including my cliche Socrates one above. Change hurts and ultimately, as humans, it comes natural to fear pain.

Change can go one of three ways.

Good, Bad or plain indifference.

Good changes in life are things like a new baby coming into the family, a promotion, new tooling that saved your company thousands or Dunkin' Donuts bringing back pumpkin donuts. These Changes that can be automatically viewed as "Progress".

Bad change, however, can be hard to relate to the word "Progress". Its how we react and perceive change itself to make ALL change, "Progress" . It is much easier said than done but the best way to approach bad change is, change yourself.

It sucks and your going to have to deal with it anyway, why not make the best of it. In the donut example above, It took me a while and I went through a long denial phase but eventually it was as easy as, finding another place to eat donuts. So now I like to go to a local shop called Jupiter Donut Company in Palm Harbor, FL that makes donuts 1000 times better than Dunkin and I can get donuts that I didn't know exist that makes me forget about the pumpkin donuts all together.

I have to go a little bit out of my way for it, but it is more than worth it.

Out of that horrible change in my life, I just found a different path to get something that is much more rewarding.

Did it suck for a while?

But at the end of the day, I found a way to make that Bad Change in my life, Progress. Because I also decided the only way to eliminate the bad change of losing my pumpkin donuts, into a weight loss journey that gave me the energy and stamina to do what I am doing now.

I found a better way of doing it.

If we look at some of the same examples from a different point of view, change wont be viewed as progress. I could have sulked around crying about it saying "There's nothing I can do" , when I did that, I would find myself year after year being disappointed.

If operations are too expensive to win new business, the tools that you've been using are getting discontinued, you're old machine finally dies and you can't replace it or your favorite breakfast is only available 3 months out of the year. These are changes that are being forced on you, it is all about what you do in these situations to get back on top. Will you be down for a while, ofcourse. But make sure you find a way to make progress out of these bad changes.

Embrace change, good, bad or indifferent. Make sure that if it is any of the three, make sure that progress is made.

Speaking for myself, I had to find a way to power through the fear of change and you can realize that it really isn't that bad. Still sucks while you're in the middle of it but once you come out the other side, and you will, you will realize that it was not that bad because you are still breathing.

Work together with the people around you and the solution will present itself most of the time, and if it doesn't, that just means you have to take it on yourself to find a solution.
